The Cowboy Capital of the World: Why Bandera Still Rides Tall

There are towns in Texas with cowboy roots — and then there’s Bandera. Nestled along the Medina River, surrounded by rolling hills and wide-open ranchland, Bandera isn’t just proud of its heritage — it lives it every day. Known far and wide as the Cowboy Capital of the World, Bandera embodies the spirit of the Old West with a genuine authenticity that’s getting harder to find. Here, boots aren’t just for show, rodeos still pack the stands, and a handshake still means something.

There’s a certain magic that sweeps across the Hill Country in fall — cooler air, golden light, and long afternoons meant for good company and a glass of something local. Over the past two decades, this region has blossomed into one of the country’s most exciting wine, beer, and spirits destinations. From the rolling vineyards of Fredericksburg to the tucked-away distilleries near Blanco and Dripping Springs, the Hill Country pours hospitality by the glass.

The Spirit of the Hill Country: Where Texas History and Adventure Meet

There’s a certain feeling you get when you step into the Texas Hill Country — a quiet mix of wonder, freedom, and belonging. Maybe it’s the wide skies that stretch forever, or the way the hills catch the evening light just right. Maybe it’s the old stone towns, where history whispers through limestone walls, or the rivers that carve their way patiently through time. Whatever it is, this place has a spirit all its own. It’s rugged yet graceful, wild yet welcoming — the kind of place that invites you to explore, stay a while, and remember what life feels like when it’s simple and real.

Howdy Spencer, I just like to let you know that our vacation rental home was just amazing! We were so happy with our choice. The home was more beautiful and comfortable than we had hoped. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to create wonderful memories in your beautiful vacation home. We will recommend your 3H ranch without any hesitation to other friends and family and coworker. It’s truly true Texas Hill Country experience. We liked everything. Literally the overall experience was more than expected.

Great place to stay! Lots of birds and frog song at night. Perfect place for some astrophotography, far enough to have truly dark skies, but still only an hour and fifteen minutes from San Antonio. Plenty of parking for our family reunion, the road is crushed stone and fords a small stream, but none of the cars had any problems. The road was smooth and the water less than 2/3 inches. The house was well stocked! Do your shopping on the way out, but if you forget anything essential, the property most likely has you covered. Spices and cooking oil in the pantry, toiletries in the bathrooms. There are a total of 5 bed rooms. Three are semi private with queen sized beds. The other two have multiple beds and serve as passageways in and out of the master suits. We were a family reunion, so it worked very well and everyone was comfortable in the beds. Internet worked flawlessly, even with everyone sharing, great TV and sound system, friendly neighbors, and did I mention the dark skies. Most of the family enjoys hiking and camping and we were all delighted with the remote location. A couple of folks preferred hotels, Bandera and Kerrville are only about 30/40 minutes away. It let the whole group visit in a way that everyone preferred. I would highly recommend this property and can't think of anything negative.

We had a great time at 3H Ranch Retreat! This place is perfect for family reunions with plenty of beds! It is filled with vintage furniture and decor. Our family had planned to go to Lost Maples while staying at 3H Ranch, but we were having such a good time and felt there was plenty to explore- hiking along the road and up a hill, the pond- that we decided to stay put and enjoy the ranch. If you want to disconnect and enjoy the outdoors with a big group- this is the place!

I was with a group of men including my son in law and two grandsons. I highly recommend visiting here. Once you visit you will be anticipating a return trip. Everything as stated in the brochure is five star. The fish, wildlife and scenery is awesome. I highly recommend this location.

First time in the Texas hill country and was not disappointed. Beautiful surroundings. Caught myself just sitting on the porch just enjoying nature. The house is awesome felt very nostalgic. Had everything we could have ever wanted and even the things we forgot. Trip was very relaxing. Looking forward to going again.
