The logs in this cabin came out of a log cabin built in the late 1800s. Antique oak, put back together on Hill Country acreage six miles from downtown Fredericksburg, with a limestone gas fireplace at one end and a claw-foot tub in the bath.

It's a one-bedroom with a king bed and a full kitchen — the kind with real utensils and a place to sit down and eat, not a microwave and good intentions. There's a small dining area and a coffee and tea bar. If you'd rather make breakfast than drive into town for it, this is the one of the two cabins to take.

There's also a shared outdoor kitchen built for evenings when nobody feels like going anywhere. It has a large gas barbecue pit, plenty of outdoor seating, and a television, giving you another place to cook, eat, relax, and enjoy the ranch.

Outside your cabin, the private hot tub sits inside a stucco wall, so it's yours alone. There's no light out here to speak of, which means the stars come out properly — people get in that tub after dark and stay longer than they meant to. There's a covered porch with rockers and 20-mile Hill Country views.

And you will see things. Horses, ponies, a longhorn and a calf, deer that come out at dusk, and songbirds all morning. Guests end up spending more time at the fence line than they planned to.
Your well-behaved dog is welcome here. There's room to walk and plenty to smell — just keep the leash on around the pastures, because the livestock live here too.

Enchanted Rock, Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, the wineries, and Main Street are all close. But the reason to book this cabin is that you can stand on the porch at seven in the morning with a cup of coffee and not hear a single car.
