The Cowboy Capital of the World: Why Bandera Still Rides Tall

There are towns in Texas with cowboy roots — and then there’s Bandera. Nestled along the Medina River, surrounded by rolling hills and wide-open ranchland, Bandera isn’t just proud of its heritage — it lives it every day. Known far and wide as the Cowboy Capital of the World, Bandera embodies the spirit of the Old West with a genuine authenticity that’s getting harder to find. Here, boots aren’t just for show, rodeos still pack the stands, and a handshake still means something.

Hill Country Wineries, Breweries, and Distilleries to Visit This Fall

There’s a certain magic that sweeps across the Hill Country in fall — cooler air, golden light, and long afternoons meant for good company and a glass of something local. Over the past two decades, this region has blossomed into one of the country’s most exciting wine, beer, and spirits destinations. From the rolling vineyards of Fredericksburg to the tucked-away distilleries near Blanco and Dripping Springs, the Hill Country pours hospitality by the glass.

The Spirit of the Hill Country: Where Texas History and Adventure Meet

There’s a certain feeling you get when you step into the Texas Hill Country — a quiet mix of wonder, freedom, and belonging. Maybe it’s the wide skies that stretch forever, or the way the hills catch the evening light just right. Maybe it’s the old stone towns, where history whispers through limestone walls, or the rivers that carve their way patiently through time. Whatever it is, this place has a spirit all its own. It’s rugged yet graceful, wild yet welcoming — the kind of place that invites you to explore, stay a while, and remember what life feels like when it’s simple and real.

Denise
We loved our stay at Backroads Reservation! The location was super convenient to everything in Bandera within walking distance to the grocery store, Dollar General and gas station convenience store. The Medina River access was directly behind the property with easy access. It was a lovely area with plenty of water for swimming and floating. Many axis deer in the area. The backyard area was very nice with a grill, picnic table and fire pit. The kitchen had everything we needed. The bedrooms were super comfortable and the bathrooms were nice and clean. Backroads Reservations was super responsive to any questions we had and we were very happy with our entire stay of three weeks. Thank you, Denise and Crew

Enjoyed our stay at this location. Home was very clean and well set up. The screened in porch was great to set on in the evening time. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting to be close into town and central located for other cite seeing locations around in the area.

Our stay was perfect. We enjoyed the backyard and patio every day. We walked to grocery and restaurants. The house was so comfortable and clean. Bandera is a great place to spend a few days.

This is a great airbnb, especially if you’re traveling with young kiddos! We traveled with our one year old and they had outlet covers, a Tripp Trapp high chair (amazing!), a pack n play and even a few toys in the closet. The backyard is super cute and you’re not far from the river. The screened in porch was our favorite. The scenery is beautiful! If you’re planning to cook, they have a fully stocked kitchen, coffee maker, toaster and a nice new gas range. And you’re right by the grocery store if you need to get supplies. The bathrooms were very clean, had plenty of towels and hot water with good pressure. Can’t ask for much more. And the bedrooms were cute, comfy and even had a workspace if you’re working remotely. I’d reco this place to anyone looking for a stay in the Texas Hill Country!

It was awesome! Everything needed as described. Clean and comfortable. Management was excellent when needed. Quick responses. Would stay again.

We enjoyed the house and property greatly. As expected, the river was down, but it was still a lovely scene in the back of the property and we took advantage of walking around and enjoying the outdoors. The house is adorable, and well equipped. The only minor thing to be aware of is the noise from the grocery store coolers; you get used to it, but it's a constant hum like a lawn mower. Overall, highly recommend this location for adults and families with older kids!
