The Spirit of the Hill Country: Where Texas History and Adventure Meet

There’s a certain feeling you get when you step into the Texas Hill Country — a quiet mix of wonder, freedom, and belonging. Maybe it’s the wide skies that stretch forever, or the way the hills catch the evening light just right. Maybe it’s the old stone towns, where history whispers through limestone walls, or the rivers that carve their way patiently through time. Whatever it is, this place has a spirit all its own. It’s rugged yet graceful, wild yet welcoming — the kind of place that invites you to explore, stay a while, and remember what life feels like when it’s simple and real.

At Casa del Rio, a home on the stream, The Medina River shimmered like a dream. A few stairs to the river — so do bring good shoes, But that’s the hardest part, so you’ve nothing to lose. Four bedrooms inside, with beds soft and clean— Though twelve is a stretch (if you know what I mean). Ten adults fit fine without bumping a head, But two more? Book the casita instead. That casita next door? A peaceful escape— Private, comfy, the perfect shape For a couple to rest in quiet delight— I grabbed it on check-in, and it felt just right. Shady decks and wide meadow views, Made for good sittin’ and catchin' a snooze. We fished out back like some hill country sages, Catching fish that were clearly… not record-breaking ages. We caught so many fish it felt absurd— Even the worms flipped us the bird. We grilled up a feast as the sun sank low, Then lit the chiminea for an ember-lit show. With cool drinks in hand and steaks on the flame, This riverside getaway earned its good name.

We had an amazing stay with friends at this eclectic river house. It is located on a very quiet road with lots of privacy. Plenty of space with three bathrooms and spread out so everyone had plenty of space. The kitchen is fully equipped and everything we needed. The view from the back balcony was perfect. At dusk saw many deer and so peaceful. I would highly recommend this house. We will be back for sure

Have been coming to this house 2007-2015 - missed the past 4 years - back again in 2020. House is comfortable for large group - lots to do in the area

We had a wonderful stay and loved the home and the location on the Medina river. My only feedback would be to make it a little more explicit in the listing that the back porch hangs over a steep cliff with relatively low railings. it was referenced in the liability release but it would be good to include in the listing so folks traveling with small children (like us) are aware at the time of booking. Including a picture of the home from the River could suffice. We were wary of that the whole time because of our fearless 1 year old but all in all we enjoyed the home, the field for running around and the proximity to the river and walking trails.

Very quiet, clean, and comfortable. A great respite that (mostly) got my kids off their screens and outside in nature. We especially enjoyed going for walks along (and in) the river every morning. The house had everything we could think of, and it was exactly as described and pictured in the listing (right down to those steep stairs down to the river). There was great bird and wildlife watching without ever leaving the back patio. We were so relaxed that we didn't want to leave. We will definitely be back.

The Medina River is not big, but having this house right on the river was very nice. The water was flowing and crystal clear! There are a lot of very steep steps down to the river, so this isn’t the place for those who aren’t sure footed. The house also has steps into or out of most every room, so again it wouldn’t be suitable for disabled or weak footed. The house is very Spanish and quite large. We had 9 with no problems. The kitchen was well equipped with all the spices, bags, two bar-b-que grills, kayaks, a canoe etc. It was a very fun few days. The hosts were very responsive and we would come back.
