The Hill Country is Wine Country!

In the past two decades or so, the wine industry in the Hill Country has exploded with growth. That’s easy to see, with new wineries opening at a rapid pace...but we, and some of our readers, have questions. How are productive wine regions discovered? Are there official wine producing areas, and if so, how are they designated as such? This article will dig a little deeper into these questions and more.

A Handy Hill Country Q & A

At Backroads Reservations, we’re especially aware that the Texas Hill Country is reliant in a big way on tourism. We’re proud to welcome people here, and to introduce them to our own little corner of heaven. With that said, we’re also aware that everyone can’t be from here; we have a tongue-in-cheeksaying that “I’m not from Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.”

A Park By Any Other Name: Hill Country WMAs

Visitors to the Texas Hill Country are generally aware of the state, county, and city parks available to them for recreation and relaxation. From the sprawling 12,000-plus acres of the Government Canyon State Natural Area to the modest but still impressive 16 acres of Old Tunnel State Park, there’s plenty of space and natural diversity to explore, not to mention parks of wildly varying sizes!

What an amazing place! It was beautiful - 10 out of 10 - WOULD RECOMMEND! We had a blast and loved every minute!

First of all our Host was amazing. She welcomed my husband and I straight away with warmth and hospitality after our crazy drive. She asked us to just let her know if there was anything that we may need to please feel free to walk over. My husband and I both have worked in the hospitality industry for years so we can see when someone genuinely cares. When we give someone five stars if means that they went over and beyond to make our stay as comfortable, stress free and peaceful as possible. We loved how we had a sense of warmth, comfort and security. I can't stress how much we needed this experience of healing comfort. Thank you so much for having us! 💕🌻

This was a perfect location for my wife and I for a weekend get away. Even though there are other accommodations on the property, we felt we had privacy. We wanted to stay in Fredricksburg but there were no places available. Staying here turned out to be a true blessing as the drive from Bandara to Fredricksburg was a beautiful drive through the hill country and allowed us to spend some time in Kerrville on our way to Fredricksburg. The owners were available but not intrusive. They were a very nice couple and their place was just what we were looking for.

Had such a great stay! Communication with host was great, and check in was easy. Host provided tons of information on what to do and see in the area and we Loved the little touches like the breakfast items provided. Amazing location for a nice getaway. So nice to relax with some wine and see the sunset in the hill country. Also awesome to wake up to longhorns in the field and chickens running around. The horse is super friendly too and was my girlfriend’s favorite. Would definitely recommend to anyone.

Very cozy cabin that was decorated with many charming items. The host met us shortly after arrival and she told us about the property and how she came to own it. I used to live in San Antonio and was familiar with the area around Bandera. It is one of the loveliest parts of the country and this property reflects that! We stayed two nights and spent time nearby in Bandera, Lost Maples State Natural Area, and Garner State Park. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Dave Fautheree & Debbie Russell Frisco, TX

The stay on the ranch in Sophie’s cottage was such a relaxing experience. Spending the quiet night and morning just being present with grand open land around you and the company of chickens, Longhorns and the most kind horse really made it a stay to remember!
