The Hill Country is Wine Country!

In the past two decades or so, the wine industry in the Hill Country has exploded with growth. That’s easy to see, with new wineries opening at a rapid pace...but we, and some of our readers, have questions. How are productive wine regions discovered? Are there official wine producing areas, and if so, how are they designated as such? This article will dig a little deeper into these questions and more.

A Handy Hill Country Q & A

At Backroads Reservations, we’re especially aware that the Texas Hill Country is reliant in a big way on tourism. We’re proud to welcome people here, and to introduce them to our own little corner of heaven. With that said, we’re also aware that everyone can’t be from here; we have a tongue-in-cheeksaying that “I’m not from Texas, but I got here as fast as I could.”

A Park By Any Other Name: Hill Country WMAs

Visitors to the Texas Hill Country are generally aware of the state, county, and city parks available to them for recreation and relaxation. From the sprawling 12,000-plus acres of the Government Canyon State Natural Area to the modest but still impressive 16 acres of Old Tunnel State Park, there’s plenty of space and natural diversity to explore, not to mention parks of wildly varying sizes!

What guests are saying...

While the the cabin may be small it was absolutely perfect for my wife and I. It was so quiet and peaceful with an abundance of wildlife to see right outside the door. The owners home was close but you would never know and don’t let that discourage you. I never met Tricia but communicated with her via text. She was incredibly pleasant and helpful. I did meet Jon outside and he was a great character and very welcoming. The town of Bandera was exactly what you would expect of an old western town and even had a reenactment shootout on Saturday. I will never need to visit anywhere else in Texas just straight to the stronghold for a quiet time with Tricia and Jon. Thank you both and we look forward to visiting again in the future.
Had a very relaxing, easy weekend. The bed was very uncomfortable and i would definitely bring an air matress next time, but the scenery and hot tub made up for the lack of sleep.
Cabin was very well stocked with all basic necessities plus. Very pleasant and peaceful. We took our 5 month old pup and he had a blast down at the creek. My husband spend a lot of his time fishing. Town was close enough in case we needed anything else. All in all we had a good time. My husband had a blast conversing with John and bought trees from John which will be a lasting memory of the Red Cloud Cabin. Which God willing we will be visiting again.
The property was basic but comfortable, and the location on the river was beautiful. We caught several small fish and the dog swam until she could barely stay awake! We saw several deer and Axis, as well as a racoon crossing the shallow part of the river. We give the property a 5 because it is exactly as reflected in the online posting. For our purposes we would have liked a little better stocked kitchen, but my wife loves to cook, even when we travel. But all the essentials were there and we had a great time. Fun place for 2 to get out of the city.
The Stronghold was absolutely relaxing. We were able to slept late, cooked full meals, fished and toured the surrounding area. Tricia was so kind and accommodating. She answered our questions and addressed our concerns. Our favorite thing to do was sit in the private hot tub and star gaze late into the night. This place is perfect for couples. We will be back.
My husband and I had a great time staying at the stronghold. We hiked the natural area 25 min away and then cooled off in the creek in the back. We were able to disconnect from society because there truly is no wifi or cell reception. Our dogs loved it there. First water trip for one of the pups and he started getting his swimming legs under him. It was a great place to play with them and get much needed R&R.
